– We want to provide a portal to a new world of sound
Described as “a guide to the future of Norwegian music”, Nothing Personal release their debut EP on the 10th of June.
Nothing Personal is a trio comprised of Dorothea Økland, Thea Emilie Wang and Solveig Wang. They have been gaining traction in the Norwegian underground scene over the last three years, playing at festivals such as By:Larm (Oslo) and the Borealis Festival (Bergen).
Nothing Personal is excited to announce their debut EP “The Alchemy of Nothing Personal”.
Doglover95 (Tobias Grønberg) features on the track “Stop Making Noise”, which he also co-produced and co-mixed.
- Alchemy is the practice of attempting to find a formula to create gold. Our project is inspired by this concept. We follow leads within the music and create live sound collages trying to transmute sound into “gold”. We search, find, and fail. All is part of our process, says the trio.
The band describe their project as “curated improvisation”, combining aspects of experimental pop, jazz, R&B and electro acoustic music. They are inspired by musicians such as Supersilent and Sidsel Endresen.
All three musicians share a passion for electronics and gadgets, and are always looking for new, exciting and often unexpected sounds, melodies and textures.
- Whilst performing, we improvise and experiment with the equipment we have on stage - and explore sounds with complete freedom of expression, says the trio.
The trio’s set up includes a Moog Grandmother, a fleamarket sourced Casio keyboard with an echo pedal, Ableton live, an Elektron drum machine, a Moog DFAM drum synth, vocal boxes, pedals, clarinet and a Teenage Engineering’s OP-1, to name a few.
– Nothing Personal is a project where everyone does everything. We sing, play, produce and mix our own music, which means that we are constantly challenging ourselves artistically.
"Stop Making Noise" with Doglover95 is the focus track on the EP and is about not caring about what others think you should do, the trio says.
Nothing Personal often base their music on conceptual ideas, such as the song with clarinet and vocals with autotune. Working with these kinds of contrasts is the core of the bands foundation.
– We think the connection between electronics and those who control it, the space between the human and mechanical, is very interesting, says the band.
The band has garnered many accolades since 2019 for their experimental approach to pop music: «A band that truly dares to produce soundscapes that can be both beautiful and ugly at the same time - and always keep one on the edge of the seat,» wrote the Danish GAFFA after the trio's concert at By:Larm.
- Our goal of the project is to make improvised music available, the trio explains. They experience that a new generation of audience members are open to new and somewhat foreign soundscapes.
- People love to be surprised. Nothing Personal should be a door into a world of sound that listeners may not have known they liked.
On Friday 10th of June, Nothing Personal will release their debut EP on the record company Dugnad rec. Nothing Personal will play several concerts in Norway in the summer and autumn of 2022. They are currently also working on their second EP -
«The Diary of Nothing Personal».
