about

With a strong influence from the traditional American jazz scene, combined with great inspiration from the harmonic world of contemporary and retrospective pop-music, Julian Haugland’s compositions is an attempt to create a link through the blurry barriers between pop and jazz music.

The line-up includes three world-class musicians: Bjørn Vidar Solli, Jon Wikan and Seamus Blake. On this particular album, which is Haugland’s first album as a leader, the listeners are welcomed by a short bass intro («Vorspiel») which further evolves into a second-line groove tune which is set up by Jon Wikan on drums. Soulful guitarist Bjørn Vidar Solli and saxophone colossus Seamus Blake present the melody. The tune can give some reminiscence to guitarist John Scofield.

Next up is the song entitled «Hipster Vibes.» A strange, mysterious riff together with an equally odd melody which transforms in a split second to a very straight pop kind of tune, interestingly moving between the two worlds. «United» is composed to shine light upon the feeling of standing together as a unity and contains high information melody lines as well as some very singable ones. The improvisational ground could very well be the chord changes of a singer/songwriter tune but is interpreted, especially by Blake, using a be-bop/jazz language.

«Day One» is written for the first day of a change in a person's life. The first day of a journey, a relationship or perhaps a new year. Maybe a festival? «The Festival» describes the high intensity along with huge emotional specter one may experience in a period of celebration. As a close-up up for the album is the ballad «Stay Here,» a lyrical piece about cherishing the present moment.
